Trip from 1/08

  • 20080112160220
We went on a trip in January to check out the city and make sure it was a place we wanted to move. And even in the winter it was beautiful and we found lots of fun things to do and hung out with a lot of cool people. We felt at home, as we had in London, and that was the feeling we were looking for.

Changing Pad

This is from Simplicity 3712. I used some left over fabric from my bag making days and bought some coordinating blue fleece and some dark green bias tape.

The gray pockets hold a wipes case and diapers. The pattern had directions for stroller straps but I made a wrist strap instead. It is a little long but it will do the job.

This is not the slimmest of changing pads but it is cooshy.

Cash back with Bing

Those of you in the know or related to nerds will know that Bing.com lunched recently. It is a new search engine my Microsoft, there replacement for Google. I haven't used it much, Chris likes it but the one thing that I have used is there cash back program.

Apparently they have set up some sort of deal with different vendors where if you search through Bing for a product then go to these certain sites you can get cash back on your purchase. You have to set up a little account but if you already have Hotmail (not many do anymore) or an XBox Live account you can use those.

Since my due date is coming up fast we decided it was time to buy the car seat. I was originally going to buy it on Amazon but with Bing we decided to see if there was a better deal. I found the seat for the same price as on Amazon, with free shipping and 10% cash back with Bing. And if I used Pay Pal my refund would come quicker. So I am going to be getting $26 cash back on my carseat! This could add up if you do a lot of shopping online.

Diaper Sprayer Deal

I found this info on another comment on the Simple Mom site. This woman's blog is Homemaker in Progress. What a great name.

Anyway she found this deal on a diaper sprayer, which is normally $45.

First go to Diapers.com, (this deal works if you have never purchased from them before).

Pick out the diaper sprayer, and a pack of diapers to make the purchase over $49 to qualify for free shipping.

While in the shopping cart, before you check out go to the Parent magazine ad and print out the form to get a $15 rebate instead of the magazine.

Then when you go to check out use these codes:
Moneyback (to get $10 off your purchase when you purchase diapers)
10percent (to get discount I think of 10% off the sprayer)

I got some Seventh Generation newborn diapers for $10.99, minus $10.00 the sprayer for $45.00 minus $4.50 so my total was $41.45 plus the mail in rebate I will get which will bring my total down to about $26. Not to shabby for a pack of diapers and a sprayer and free shipping!

Cloth Diapers

I had moved away from the idea of using cloth diapers (cds) for a while but now I am back on board. I read too many things that make it seem easy enough to do. And it seems like the right thing for me to do. As a steward of our money and other resources I need to at least give it my best effort.

Cloth-diapers-1

This week on Simple Mom she has been giving a cd 101 series. And this weekend she is having a giveaway. By linking here I hope to win, but I also hope to help you win too :) If you are interested in trying cds.

101diaper

Right now I am thinking of going with prefolds (like grandma used to have) and diaper covers. I also want to use the G Diapers with their flushable inserts while out and about and use home made inserts while at home. I have read that several people use prefolds in the Gs and some have made fleece inserts which I may try too. It is hard to know what will work best. I guess just getting a few things to start is good until we find a system that works for us.

PS Simple Mom is a great blog. She has so many great topics that she covers. Even before I got pregnant I was following her. I highly recommend checking her out.

gDiapers

Starterkit_banner

I have spent a lot of time (even before getting pregnant) on what kind of diapers I would use. I am still spending time on it but I think I have finally found something that is a good solution to all my concerns, gDiapers. These are a cloth cover with a waterproof (snap out) liner and a flush-able insert. You can throw them in the trash (no plastic so less landfill time), or home compost the wet ones.

101diaper

I read some reviews this morning, and they are mixed; much like the cloth diapers I was looking at. I think the lesson is to not buy too much of anything until you test it. What I read this morning was interesting though, people are putting cloth prefolds in the gDiaper cover as a more cost effective combination of the two choices; and often using the gDiaper insert when they are out and about. The g covers are about $16 and the inserts about 30 cents a piece, so not super cheap but less taxing on my conscience. With the inexpensive prefolds as inserts it seems that would be a lot cheaper than getting the fancy cloth diapers.

Who knows. I am sure I will have lots of opportunity to find what works for us. But so far this seems like a good set of options.

Baby room

Here are the fabrics I picked out today for the baby room. The crib we bought is black so I think the cool colors will look really nice with that.

076

It is hard to capture the true colors but in Paper Source language it would be Pool, Chartreuse and Leaf and these two papers are Night and Sage. So they should be able to coordinate with sage and white sheets. Since baby store only come in blue, pink, sage and white.

079

I really love these colors. I didn't even want to wash these fabrics because they look so pretty like they are. Next I am going to have to cut them!!!

UPDATE: I found some solid fabric in PS color Moss which goes really well with the fabrics and brings them all together. Ahhhh these colors make me happy.

My Skyline birthday

This is the skyline chili I made the other night. It turned out really well for a random recipe on the internet. I didn't have all the spices, if I did it may have helped the minor flaws (it was a little too sweet, not enough savory).

I was very pleased that Chris enjoyed it a lot. Cincinnati would be proud to have him.

Wine substitute for the pregnant

Landingpic2
I saw this at the grocery store Wednesday, and since it was Top Chef night I figured a glass of "wine" would be nice. I bought the Cabernet and the Chardonnay. They didn't taste like wine but they were really good juices. I think I may have to have them as a fancy treat again. They are best super cold. They also have two that are mixed with white tea but as I am avoiding caffeine I passed on those.
